## Author notes / illustrative keys where applicable

1. Check whether volunteers can describe their agreed tasks and commitment boundaries. Clarify role expectations before interpreting limited participation as a lack of interest in the cause.
2. Separate scheduling, preparation and resource barriers to regular participation. Investigate practical arrangements without asking volunteers to justify private circumstances or promise greater availability.
3. Find support that would make continued participation feasible for this volunteer. Compare the request with the actual role before offering resources unrelated to the obstacle.
4. Check whether upcoming opportunities are announced early enough for volunteers to plan. Improve notice and schedule visibility rather than assume repeated invitations increase participation.
5. Identify a task that fits the volunteer's available commitment, including smaller contributions. Confirm task requirements without treating a preferred option as acceptance of a future shift.

Interpretation caution: Do not infer disengagement from limited available time.
